The Four Corners of Civilization
“The mortal world of Temerant where the main story unfolds”
also known as Four Corners, Four Corners of Civilization
Appearance§
The Four Corners is a sprawling, diverse landscape rather than a single place: forests, roads, cities, the University at Belenay-Barren, and frontier edges such as the Stormwal that bound it. Its regions contrast sharply in their people and naming conventions, and oddities arise at its margins, such as Yll observing a different sky and lunar cycle than the rest of the world.
Description§
The Four Corners of Civilization is the in-world name for the broad mortal region of Temerant where most of Kvothe's story takes place, set apart from the Fae realm. It is large and culturally varied, spanning Vintas, the Commonwealth, the Ceald, Yll, Ademre and more, each with distinct names, customs and dialects. Many of its regions favour oral tradition over book learning, while the Tehlin church and the educated use the old language Tema. The University lies in Belenay-Barren within it. Crossing the Four Corners takes considerable travel time, and the Adem operate as a renowned mercenary export, sending fighters out among the wider world. The Yllish are reported to track a different lunar cycle than the rest of the Four Corners, reading the sky to tell time. After his time at the University and in the Fae, Kvothe travels widely across this world, where, as he says, safe roads are the bones of civilization.
